Today was a very busy and long day! We started with 8 am training session, with a devotional by Pastor Rodney Hunt. Then we learned what the schedule for the day would be. After a short break, we had specialized meetings for various folks -- the family hosts, the food crew, and production were all getting ready for the guest to arrive. Family hosts went to each guest room and prepped the room with cleaning supplies, trash bags, detergents, turn down notes & candies for the pillows, invitations for the theme dinners, beach bag for the guests and beach towels for them to use. The food crew began preparation for our first theme dinner - nautical night. They purchased the groceries and then started to work on preparing the wonderful meal of flank steak, green beans with bacon, corn casserole, strawberry spinach salad, sweet tea, fruit punch, and cupcakes. We had great weather all day - a bit of a breeze occasionally and no rain.
At 3 pm, we all gathered on the front lawn and waited for the guests to arrive. Each time a new family pulled up, their host family or two who are paired with them for the week met them and then helped them unload their things and get them into their room. Our particular family has a 17 yr old with a recurrence of cancer as well as 14 and 7 yr old siblings. Our kids really hit it off with them right away and we are excited about getting to know them and serving them this week.
They really wanted to come back to Blue Skies as volunteers, but since the cancer has returned, they are back as guests.
We pray that one day God will heal him so that he can then serve others in the same way he is being blessed this week.
After everyone arrived and were settled, we had a short "pep rally" outside on the lawn. Each guest family was introduced to all the others and a fun social time ensued, as everyone started getting to know each other and meeting new friends. We then headed into dinner, which was fabulous and then to the beach to enjoy the sunset. It is amazing to look at the sunset and realize God is the creator of all of that.
After the sunset, the guests headed back to their rooms and the volunteers had a short end-of-day wrap up meeting where we watched a slide show of the day, prayed for tomorrow and had a few announcements.
