The last Bulgaria trip in March was my first time in Eastern Europe and I was first struck with how poor the country was. As a former communist country the infrastructure is in a lot of disrepair and the people there are living off of very small incomes.
We are working with a very excited team of Young Lifer's in Bulgaria who are starting to have clubs at the Special School for teens with special needs.
Many of the children we worked with were living at the special school not because they didn't have parents but because their parents couldn't afford to feed them. Most of them still have contact with their parents and may see them on the weekends or monthly.
The children ARE well cared for and loved on by the staff.
We played games with them that could double as therapy for the kids. They were all so excited to play and dance with us. At the end of club we would share a story with them that had a simple truth about God as the focus.
On Disney Day where we dressed up as Disney characters, Kathy shared with them that even though it's fun to dress up and pretend to be something different, God made us the way we are for a purpose. He loves us just the way we are.
The next day when we asked them what we talked about the day before several responded that "God loves them the way they are". It was amazing to me that even though these kids struggle with their minds that they were remembering these truths.
Please keep us in prayer as we go back and to minister with them again this week!
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:24
