ALBANIA: A Palm Sunday Weekend Farewell

Our team’s final day in Albania gave us an opportunity to visit Kruje Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum which honors Albania’s hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg.  He was considered by many as a model of Christian resistance to the Ottoman Turks in the 15th century as they fought to keep the Turks from advancing into Europe. Our next stop was in the ancient city of Durres which is also known as Illyricum in the New Testament.

Many early Christians were martyred by being fed to lions in Durres’ 20,000 seat amphitheater.  Here is a collage of pictures from our visit to the amphitheater and the early church that was located there.

Today, Durres is a modern and beautiful city on the Adriatic.  We enjoyed walking along the beach and having a yummy lunch.

After driving back to Tirana, some of us attended a wonderful Palm Sunday weekend church service which was concluded by singing “Because He Lives!”  Then the children waved construction paper palm fronds and sang “Hosanna”.  Be sure to watch the video of the praise team’s rendition of “Because He Lives”.  They did a fabulous job!

Most of our team flew back to Atlanta on Sunday and will return to work on Monday morning, exhausted and dealing with jet lag, but refreshed with the memories of an exhilarating week in Tirana.  However, some of us have remained in Albania for an additional week of ministry.  We are grateful for God’s blessings, new believers, wonderful friendships, warm hospitality, and great conversations...while enjoying cappuccinos, Albanian-style thick hot chocolate, and yummy gelato.  We can't wait to return!
